Shion took a bite out of his banana and peered up from his Calculus book. Nezumi was eating an apple. Well, to be more accurate, he was holding an apple and sleeping. Buta sat next to him as usual, jabbering away in her irritating high-pitched voice.
That’s not nice, Shion chastised himself, shaking his head and forcing himself to look away. Why would he even think such a thing? Buta was a nice girl, and really pretty too. He didn’t usually insult people for no reason, and Shion was ashamed of himself. It was probably just his lack of sleep affecting his brain. He’d been pulling all-nighters to study for his Midterm exams that week, but that afternoon would be the last one, his Calculus exam.
Before he knew it, he had glanced back up again. Buta was still talking, and though Nezumi’s eyes stayed closed, he took a bite of his apple.
“Nezumi! Are you even listening to me?”
Nezumi opened his eyes, and Shion bit his lip, his heart pounding. His eyes were a startling grey, and always caught Shion off guard. He could spend a whole lunch period just looking into them. Shion blushed, shuddering to know what Nezumi might say if he knew that. Buta was so lucky. She could look into Nezumi’s eyes as often as she wanted.
Wait, what was Shion thinking? Buta was lucky? She was his girlfriend – of course she deserved to look into his eyes! Was Shion thinking he would like to take her place?
